Patient Care & Services

Everything you need to know about becoming an MRMP patient — from your first consultation through postpartum recovery and beyond.

Your Journey

What to Expect

Every patient in the MRMP is assigned a dedicated Patient Navigator — a clinically trained coordinator who will guide you through every phase of the program, from your first appointment to your 12-month postpartum follow-up. You will never navigate this process alone.

01

Initial Consultation

A 60-minute meeting with one of our reproductive endocrinologists. We review your medical history, explain the program in full, and answer any questions. There is no charge for this visit and no obligation to proceed.

02

Comprehensive Evaluation

If you are a candidate, we schedule a full workup: abdominal/pelvic MRI, complete hormone panel, genetic carrier screening, and a psychological readiness assessment with Dr. Lindqvist's team.

03

Care Planning & Enrollment

Your multidisciplinary team reviews all findings and meets with you to present a personalized care plan. You will choose your insemination pathway (IUI, IVF-ET, or Natural Insemination) and preferred delivery pathway (CE or TAD) at this stage.

04

Stem Cell Harvest & Organoid Development

An outpatient biopsy collects the cells needed to cultivate your organoid. The 8–12 week development process takes place in the Zhao Laboratory, with weekly updates provided to you and your Navigator.

05

Hormonal Priming & HUOI Surgery

A 4–6 week hormone protocol prepares your body for implantation. The HUOI procedure is laparoscopic, typically 90 minutes, and most patients go home the next morning.

06

Insemination & Pregnancy

Following confirmed organoid integration, you proceed to your chosen insemination pathway. Our team monitors you closely throughout the 37–39 week gestation period with biweekly visits.

07

Delivery & Newborn Care

Delivery is planned with your surgical team and neonatologist. Both CE and TAD deliveries take place at Harrington University Medical Center, with our Level IV NICU available if needed.

08

Postpartum Support

Comprehensive postpartum care for 12 months, including hormonal tapering, physical recovery support, lactation consultation (if desired), and ongoing behavioral health services for you and your family.

From Our Patients

Patient Stories

The Navigator program was everything. Having someone in my corner who knew every doctor on the team, who could explain every form and every procedure — I honestly don't know how I would have done it without that support.

— Marcus T., MRMP Patient 2023, Boston MA

I was terrified before the HUOI surgery. But Dr. Okonkwo walked me through every step beforehand, and the procedure itself was so much easier than I expected. I was home the next day. The whole pregnancy was surprisingly... manageable.

— David R., MRMP Patient 2024, Portland OR

The psychological support team here is phenomenal. Dr. Lindqvist helped me work through so many things I didn't even realize I was carrying. The postpartum sessions were equally valuable. I felt genuinely cared for as a whole person.

— James K., MRMP Patient 2022, Chicago IL

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the entire MRMP process take from consultation to delivery?
Most patients complete the full program — from initial consultation through delivery — in approximately 18–24 months. The organoid development phase (8–12 weeks) and gestation (37–39 weeks) account for the majority of this timeline.
Is male pregnancy safe?
The MRMP's five-year cohort study published in The Lancet (2025) reported a major complication rate of 4.2%, comparable to abdominal surgical procedures of similar complexity. As with any medical procedure, risks are discussed in detail during the consultation and informed consent process.
Can I use a sperm donor or a partner's sperm?
Yes. Patients may use their own sperm, a partner's sperm, or donor sperm from a licensed sperm bank. Our genetic counseling team can assist with donor selection and all required screening.
What is the difference between CE and TAD delivery?
Cesarean Extraction (CE) is a laparoscopic abdominal procedure and the most commonly chosen delivery pathway (currently ~78% of MRMP patients). Transanal Assisted Delivery (TAD) is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure available to eligible patients. Your surgical team will discuss both options in detail based on your individual anatomy and preferences. Full details are on our Delivery Options page.
Will I be able to breastfeed?
Induced lactation is possible for some MRMP patients using hormonal protocols. Our lactation consultants will discuss this option during postpartum planning. Formula feeding and other options are equally supported.
Is there support available for partners and family members?
Yes. Partners are welcome at all appointments and are encouraged to participate in care planning. Our behavioral health team offers individual and couples counseling, and a peer support group for partners of MRMP patients meets monthly.
